Today our presenters will embark on a 24 hour detox under the guide of Cathy Soraghan. Our viewers can participate too!
Detox
Detox, short for detoxification, in general is the removal of toxic substances from the body. It is one of the functions of the liver and kidneys, but can also be achieved artificially by techniques such as dialysis and (in a very limited number of cases) chelation therapy.
Other less mainstream methods for eliminating toxic substances from the body include the modification of the diet and addition of certain herbs and rituals such as colonic irrigation, juice fasting and sweat lodges. All of these methods claim to assist the body's natural detoxification process.
Introduction
The liver is a fantastic organ that can deal with and break down a large amount of toxins for natural release from our body. However if exposed to a large amount of toxins over a sustained period of time, the liver will not work to the best of its ability, leaving you feeling and looking sluggish. The idea of a detox is to give the liver a break from these toxins and allowing it to repair from the onslaught of toxins.
Other organs that will benefit are the digestive tract, the skin and the urinary tract.
Cathy Soraghan's 24-Hour Detox Programme
We're putting Sheana and Trevor through Cathy's 24 hour programme and are sending them home tonight with a camera to keep a video diary. We'll see how they got on tomorrow.
1. Start the day with the ancient technique of Oil Pulling. The ancient Ayurvedic technique of Oil Pulling helps to detox the body instantly. This is not commonly known but easy and very effective and not as bad as it sounds! Move one tablespoon of oil slowly in the mouth as rinsing and swishing for minimum of ten minutes but ideally up to 20 minutes. Spit oil from mouth into sink and rinse mouth and sink thoroughly. Sesame Oil - 5.99.
2. Give your stomach a break
Cathy will show us some of the foods that she believes helps detox the body. She recommends the Cabbage Soup Diet for the day and highlights the consumption of water as an integral part of any detox programme. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and if you're a smoker stay off them for the 24 hours.
Prepare the cabbage soup the day before detoxing and for breakfast, lunch and dinner you can have as much soup as you like.

If you are not someone who exercises regularly Cathy will explain the importance of exercising during your Detox Day. She will highlight how exercise helps increase circulation which in turn helps detoxification as it gets the bood moving faster through the body. As you are not going to have proper solids for the 24 hours, do gentle exercises. Cathy will demonstrate a simple exercise that can be done with a dyna band.
4. Massage. Cathy recommends that on the day of your detox programme you book yourself in for a Lymphatic Drainage Massage if at all possible. Lymphatic Drainage Massage helps to increase the bodies' natural flow through the body's natural filtration system. This increased circulation helps in the elimination of nasty toxins from your body. Alternatively you can simply brush your body vigorously with a firm body brush making sure to brush in the direction of the heart. Body brush 12 from any good chemist.
